Product care

The most important thing is that you read the temperature conditions, moisture and what to feed the ants. It is important not to introduce too small a colony into a large formicarium, much less just one queen. It’s good if the formicarium is divided by partitions and if the first chamber is very small (such as in our Comfort formicarium). We recommend reading more information about keeping ants in our blogs!

Camponotus sanctus

Description

The Camponotus sanctus is a species of ant known for its monogyny colony type. The colony can grow to contain up to 10,000 individuals, making it a relatively large and thriving community. These ants have a fast development speed, allowing the colony to expand and flourish quickly.

Size

The Camponotus sanctus exhibit various sizes depending on their roles within the colony. The queen ants measure approximately 15-16mm in length, while the workers range from 5-12 mm in size. Major workers, also known as soldiers, can reach sizes of 12-15 mm. It’s important to note the distinct colorations within the species. Workers are predominantly pale yellow, while soldiers have partially dark heads. The queen ant is mostly black, with a partially yellow belly and yellowish-brown legs. Male ants are reddish yellow with darker heads.

Nutrition

The Camponotus sanctus has specific dietary requirements to ensure their health and well-being. Their nutrition primarily consists of food insects such as cockroaches and crickets. Additionally, they can consume syrup made from a mixture of water and honey (ratio 4:1/3:1/2:1), as well as various fruits, vegetables, jelly, and cooked chicken without salt.

Humidity and Temperature

Maintaining the proper humidity and temperature levels is crucial for the successful breeding and survival of the Camponotus sanctus. The nest should have a humidity level of 50-60%, ensuring a suitable environment for the ants. The arena, or foraging area, should have a slightly lower humidity range of 30-50%. In terms of temperature, the nest should be kept at a constant 22-24 °C, while the arena requires a slightly higher temperature range of 26-30 °C.

Species Traits

The Camponotus sanctus possesses distinct traits that make them unique within the ant kingdom. These ants display a high level of aggression and are known for their defensive behavior. Their ability to protect their colony from potential threats is remarkable and contributes to their overall survival and success.

Recommended Nests for Breeding

When selecting nests for breeding the Camponotus sanctus, it is important to choose suitable materials that provide the necessary structure and environment for the ants to thrive. Acrylic, cork, plaster, and aerated concrete are all recommended options for creating nests that meet the needs of these ants.
