Complete Guide: Ant Breeding for Beginners
Getting Started with Ant Breeding
Before diving deep, we recommend reading our comprehensive guides: "Basic" and "Farm Start Up" that cover everything from A to Z about ant breeding for beginners.
Choosing Your Formicarium
A proper formicarium is essential for successful ant breeding. Here’s what you need to know:
- Types: Acrylic or plaster formicaria (vertical or horizontal)
- Essential components:
- Nest chamber
- Arena
- Humidification chamber
Selection Criteria for Your First Formicarium
- Match it to your chosen ant species
- Consider your available space
- Focus on functionality
- Choose one you’ll enjoy watching
Choosing Your First Ants
For beginners, select species that are:
- Forgiving of beginner mistakes
- Able to thrive at room temperature
- Easy to feed (e.g., Messor, Camponotus, or Lasius species)
Setting Up Your Colony
Key considerations for colony placement:
- Avoid direct sunlight
- Choose a quiet location away from vibrations
- Maintain proper humidity
Feeding Guidelines
Different species require different diets:
- Messor: Primarily grains with occasional insects
- Lasius/Camponotus: Sugar syrup (1:2 – 1:3 ratio) and protein sources
- Feeding frequency: Every 1-3 days for small colonies, daily for larger ones
Care Tips
- Place a water source in the arena
- Remove uneaten food promptly
- Maintain proper humidity levels
- Plan ahead for absences
Frequently asked questions
Is ant keeping legal in Europe and the US?
Yes — keeping most ant species is fully legal in the EU and US. Exceptions are invasive species listed in EU regulation 1143/2014 (Linepithema humile, Wasmannia auropunctata) and US-restricted species (Solenopsis invicta — fire ants — restricted in many US states). ANTonTOP never sells invasive or restricted species. All ants are legally sourced from certified EU breeders. No permit or registration required. We have operated since 2017.
Are ants dangerous? Do they bite or sting?
The most popular hobby species — Messor, Camponotus, Lasius, Crematogaster — are completely safe for humans and pets. Their pinch is weaker than a paper cut and only happens when an ant is directly handled. Strong-sting species (Myrmecia, Paraponera, Diacamma) we sell only to experienced keepers with clear risk disclosure on the product card. Children, allergic individuals and pet owners can safely keep any beginner species, because the colony stays inside the formicarium behind an anti-escape barrier.
Will ants escape from the formicarium?
No — a properly assembled formicarium is a closed system. The nest connects to the outworld through a sealed tube, and the outworld walls are coated with fluon or talc, a slippery powder ants cannot climb. Every ANTonTOP formicarium ships with fluon included. For extra safety, place the setup on a tray with a thin water moat. Across 8 years and thousands of orders we have not received a single ‘ants escaped at home’ report from customers using our standard kits.
Which ant species is best for beginners?
We recommend 4 species: Messor barbarus (large 1.5 cm queen, eats seeds, no diapause — ideal first year), Messor structor (native steppe harvester, hibernates 3 months in winter), Camponotus nicobarensis (colorful Asian carpenter ant, no diapause, fast growth), Camponotus irritans (hardy carpenter with a large queen). All four are marked Beginner on the product card. Avoid tropical specialists (Harpegnathos, Paraponera) and stinging species (Myrmecia) when starting.
How much does it cost to start ant keeping?
A complete starter kit at ANTonTOP starts at €45 — queen with workers, formicarium, outworld, basic food and instructions. You can also start cheaper by buying parts separately: Messor barbarus queen from €18, basic formicarium from €23. Average annual upkeep is €20–40. A single queen can live 15–25 years, making ant keeping one of the cheapest long-term exotic hobbies.
What is a formicarium and do I need one?
A formicarium is an artificial ant nest — a transparent container with chambers and tunnels where the colony lives and grows. It lets you observe the ants, control humidity and temperature, and feed safely in the connected outworld. Yes — a formicarium is essential for any colony with more than 30 workers. ANTonTOP offers acrylic, gypsum and wooden formicaria in sizes XS to XL.
How long do ants live?
Workers live 1–3 years — tropical Camponotus singularis about 12 months, native Lasius niger 2–3 years, Messor barbarus 1–2 years. Queens live much longer: Lasius niger 15–28 years (record 29), Camponotus 10–20 years, Messor 8–15 years, Pogonomyrmex 30+ years. Larvae develop 4–8 weeks. A single queen can be your companion for decades.
How do I start an ant colony step by step?
Step 1: pick a species that matches your experience — Messor barbarus or Camponotus nicobarensis for beginners. Step 2: buy a complete starter kit from €45 — includes queen, formicarium, outworld and food. Step 3: unbox at room temperature, put the queen tube in a dark, quiet spot. Do not disturb for 7–10 days. Step 4: when 20–30 workers appear, connect the tube to the formicarium and outworld. Step 5: feed 2–3× per week with protein + carbs. Step 6: keep humidity 40–60% and temperature 22–26°C.
What happens to my ants when I go on vacation?
Ants are extremely low-maintenance compared to other pets. A 2-week absence is no problem — leave a handful of seeds (Messor species) or a small protein cube plus sugar gel, fill the water reservoir, and the colony manages itself. For longer trips, our auto-refill formicaria keep humidity stable for 4–6 weeks. No daily feeding, no waste cleanup, no walks. Many keepers describe ants as the perfect ‘freelancer pet’.
Are ants smelly or do they cause allergies?
No — a healthy formicarium is odorless. Ants groom themselves constantly, do not produce body odor, and move debris into a dedicated waste pile inside the nest. The only mild scent is formic acid (a sour citrus note) released by Formica or Lasius colonies when alarmed. Ant allergies are extremely rare in Europe (no fire ants here). Beginners who want zero risk can pick stingless species — Messor barbarus, Camponotus nicobarensis, Crematogaster — all marked Beginner on the product card.
