Fluon is a slippery PTFE-based barrier liquid applied to the arena rim. Workers cannot climb past it — the rim becomes escape-proof. Essential for arenas without a sealed lid, especially for active species like Tapinoma or Monomorium.
Do I need a heating mat for ant keeping?
Yes for tropical species in unheated rooms. A small mat on one side of the nest creates a temperature gradient. Avoid heating the entire setup uniformly.
What watts heating mat for a small formicarium?
5-10 W is enough for an S-M acrylic nest. Use a thermostat to cap the temperature at 28-30 °C.
How long does Fluon last on the arena rim?
6-12 months before needing reapplication. Drier rooms and dust accumulation shorten the life. Wipe and reapply when you see workers reaching the rim without slipping.
