Ants are sensitive to humidity drift. Tropical species die in dry air; desert species fungus-grow in wet air. Temperature drift breaks hibernation cycles for European species. A small hygrometer-thermometer inside the formicarium gives you the data to react before the colony shows signs of stress.

What humidity for an ant nest?

40-60% in the nest for most species. 60-80% in the arena. Desert species (Cataglyphis, Messor) prefer 30-50% in the nest; tropical species (Pheidole, Polyrhachis) 50-70%.

Where should the hygrometer go inside the formicarium?

Inside the nest section, near the brood pile. The arena gets a separate sensor if you want both readings. A small probe-type fits through a 4 mm hole drilled in the acrylic wall.

Digital or analog hygrometer?

Digital probe-type is more accurate (±2% vs ±5% for analog). Worth the price for tropical and desert species where humidity precision matters.

How often do I check humidity?

Daily for the first week of a new setup, then weekly. After you learn the formicarium response time, monthly spot-checks are enough for stable colonies.
