What harvester ants eat

Harvester species (Messor, Pogonomyrmex, Veromessor) live on a primarily seed diet. They store grain in dedicated chambers, mill it into "ant bread" inside the nest, and forage workers carry seeds in long columns from the arena to the storage chambers.

Our standard Messor mix — calibrated for M. barbarus, M. structor, and M. capitatus worker sizes. Smaller Messor species take the fine-grain version, larger species the standard mix.

Do harvester ants eat only seeds?

Mostly. A seed mix covers 90-95% of the diet. Occasional protein (a freeze-dried mealworm every 2 weeks) during heavy brood phases. Sugar source still daily.

How often do I refill the seeds?

Weekly for most harvester colonies. The arena stays stocked with a small pile, workers carry seeds in as needed.

Can I use birdseed instead?

Some birdseed mixes work, others contain treated seeds or species not eaten by harvester ants. Our calibrated mixes are tested with live colonies and contain only ant-safe grains.
