Small species fit in compact formicariums (an S-size nest is enough for years), grow fast (a 50-worker colony in 3-4 months is normal), and reward observation with constant activity. What formicarium for a small species?

A small (S) acrylic or gypsum nest is enough for 1-2 years for most small species. Many small species never need a larger nest because workers fit comfortably in compact chambers.

Are small ants harder to handle?

Yes — soft-tip or anti-static tweezers are required for moving workers. Standard tweezers can stick to or crush small ants. See our Tweezers section for the right tool.

Do small ants escape more easily?

Some genera (Tapinoma, Monomorium) are exceptional escape artists. Always apply Fluon or talc to the arena rim and keep all connection ports tight.

How fast do small species grow?

Very fast. A founding queen produces 30-50 workers in 8-12 weeks for most tropical small species. By month 6 the colony often passes 200-300 workers.
