In nature, they nest in hollow twigs, tree bark, or crevices, forming sprawling colonies that may extend over multiple chambers. They are escape-prone — tight lids and fluon barriers are essential.

These ants show strong territoriality and will readily engage in defensive behaviors. Their gaster-raising stance and use of formic acid spray are signature traits. Despite their size, they are bold, quick, and highly visible, making them popular among advanced hobbyists.
