What makes honeypot ants unique

Honeypot ants have specialised workers called repletes that consume excess sugar and store it in their distended gaster. The gaster swells to the size of a small grape, takes on a golden-amber colour, and the replete spends the rest of its life hanging from the nest ceiling as a living food reserve. Other workers feed from the replete through trophallaxis during shortages. The behaviour evolved in arid environments where food supply is unpredictable.
