What makes trap-jaw ants special

Trap-jaw species (genera Odontomachus, Anochetus, Mystrium) have mandibles that lock open at 180 degrees and snap shut in under 0.13 milliseconds. The strike velocity exceeds 60 m/s — fast enough that the recoil launches the ant backward as an escape mechanism.
