How to hibernate your colony

From October through February, drop temperature to 8 to 12 °C for 3 to 4 months. A wine cooler, unheated room, or insulated box on a balcony all work. Keep humidity at the nest's normal level. Feed once a month with a small sugar source. Colony activity drops to near-zero, queen stops laying. In March, gradually warm to room temperature and resume normal feeding — the colony springs back within a week.
