Description

The middle pack in our grain range, sized for a harvester colony that has left the founding tube behind but isn’t a giant yet. Millet, poppy, sesame, flax and other grains make up the working diet for Messor, Pogonomyrmex, Aphaenogaster and Veromessor. Natural seeds, no chemical treatment. Same blend as the Small and Large packs; only the amount changes. Keep it dry, top up steadily through the season.

Grain Set Medium — mixed seed food for harvester ants

Grain Set Medium covers the long middle of a harvester colony’s life: past the first dozen workers, not yet a seed-devouring giant. The blend is millet, poppy, sesame, flax and other grains, the natural diet of granivorous species such as Messor, Pogonomyrmex, Aphaenogaster and Veromessor. Workers husk each seed, stack the kernels in granary chambers and mill them into the stored paste keepers call “ant bread”, which feeds the brood. Natural seeds only, no chemical treatment. It is the identical blend in our Small and Large packs; only the quantity differs. Ships from Poland with tracked EU, UK and worldwide delivery.

Why a mixed blend

A colony is not one mouth but hundreds of different sizes. Big-headed majors crack the tough grains; the smaller minors take the fine ones. Feed a single seed type and you feed half the colony; a varied mix keeps every caste working. The Medium pack is the practical day-to-day size: enough seed to stay ahead of a hungry colony without storing a year’s supply that risks going stale.

Who it is for

Growing and mid-size harvester colonies that have outgrown a starter pack. If your Messor has filled out its first nest and empties a Small pack in a sitting, this is the size that keeps pace. The Small pack suits founding queens and species trials; the Large pack is for settled 500-plus colonies. All three hold the same grains.

How to use it

Drop a pinch in the arena or by the nest entrance. The workers carry it inward, fill their granaries and process the seed at their own rate. Clear out old or damp grain before each top-up so nothing moulds. Harvesters store and ration seed themselves, so a steady trickle through the active months beats a single big pile.

Storage

Sealed and dry, the seeds keep well past a year. Damp is the only thing that spoils them — moisture sprouts or moulds grain — so let the arena dry between refills and sweep up discarded husks. Inside the nest, the colony runs its own granary hygiene.

Pairs well with

Seeds are the backbone, but a growing colony also wants a little sugar and protein while it rears brood. Offer our carbohydrate jellies through the active phase and keep a shallow water dish topped up. As the colony pushes toward 500 workers, move up to the Large pack and a roomier formicarium.

FAQ

My colony grew fast — should I jump to Large?
Once it reaches roughly 500 workers and clears a Medium pack quickly, yes. The blend is identical, so switching needs no transition.

Do omnivorous ants eat this?
Rarely. Camponotus, Lasius and similar prefer jelly and insect protein. Seeds are for true granivores like Messor and Pogonomyrmex.

How long does an opened pack last?
Over a year, kept sealed and dry away from humidity.

Which ants is it meant for?
Harvester (seed-eating) species — Messor, Pogonomyrmex, Aphaenogaster and Veromessor are the usual ones in the hobby.

Do I need to crush the grain?
Not at this stage. A mid-size colony has workers large enough to husk whole seeds. Crushing only helps tiny founding colonies.

Do you ship outside the EU?
Yes. We dispatch within 24 h from Poland with tracked delivery across the EU, the UK and worldwide.
