Think of the M as the S with the volume turned up. The accessory selection is larger and more varied, so there is more to unpack and more to set the arena up with, while the colony stays in the beginner-friendly band that makes the smaller boxes so easy to start. It is the box people reach for when the S feels a touch light but the L is more than they need. Underneath the surprise is a real colony: the cheap novelty tanks ship a few workers and no queen and are finished in two or three weeks, whereas a Mystery Box M is built around a living queen and a real formicarium, so the colony grows and keeps going for years. Every M is built around a beginner-friendly colony, picked to be simple to keep and rewarding to watch, a living science project that teaches patience and real biology away from the screen. We suggest it from around age 8 with an adult involved in feeding and watering. Most presents are forgotten by January; a living colony is bigger by spring, and the M adds the thrill of not knowing what is inside, which makes it a strong gift for a curious child, a teenager, a nature lover, or the person who seems to have everything. The colony arrives in a secure transport tube with a formicarium matched to it. Connect the tube to the entrance, keep the setup warm and quiet, and let the colony cross in its own time, usually within a few hours to two days. Detailed instructions specific to the species are always in the box: temperature, humidity, feeding and any winter rest. As a rule, keep the formicarium humid where the species needs it, out of direct sun, and feed what is provided plus a little sugar water for energy.
