Liquid sugar feeds a colony, but it also makes a mess and costs you workers. Honey spreads across the glass and traps them; an open dish of sugar water drowns them. A jelly cup hands over the same carbohydrate in a solid form the colony can swarm safely. Knock the arena and nothing spills, and one glance tells you when the cup is spent.

This set earns its keep when you run several colonies, when one big colony burns through carbohydrate quickly, or when you simply want a steady supply at the best price. Almost every kept species takes jelly: Camponotus, Lasius, Formica, Pheidole and tropical ants. Granivores like Messor pull it apart for extra carbohydrate alongside their seeds.

Peel the foil lid and set a cup in the outworld or on a feeding dish. Swap it every 3-5 days, sooner once the surface dries and crusts over, and clear out leftovers before mould and mites move in. For a big colony, put two or three cups down at once. Keep the rest sealed at room temperature; once a cup is open, fridge it and use it inside a month.

Jelly is the carbohydrate half of the menu. It fuels foragers and adult workers but does nothing for brood, which needs protein. Run the jelly alongside insect prey or a protein paste.

Lift each cup in and out cleanly on one of our drinking bowls or plates. Add Blanched Whole Crickets or Cricket Jam for protein and keep a water dish close by for a complete feeding station.

How often do I put a fresh cup out?
Every 3-5 days. A cup holds up about 4-7 days in the arena, so change it once the surface dries or hardens.

Where do I keep the spares?
Sealed cups sit happily at room temperature for months. Open one and it goes in the fridge, used within a month.

Which flavours land in the set?
A mixed, assorted selection. Most colonies are not picky and take whatever turns up.

Will harvester ants like Messor eat it?
Yes. Messor and other seed-eaters take jelly for extra carbohydrate, and nearly every kept species accepts it too.

Do I still owe them protein?
Yes. Jelly is carbohydrate only. Offer insects or a protein paste for brood to grow.
