Pseudomyrmex lynceus is a Brazilian twig ant, a slender, fast, wasp-like species built for life in narrow stems. A striking tropical colony for experienced keepers.
Why this species
Twig ants look unlike anything else in the hobby. This Brazilian species has the long, agile, almost wasp-like body of the group, and it is quick and alert, so a mature colony is properly lively to watch by day. In the wild these ants live inside hollow stems, which makes a thin, twig-style nest both natural and a great way to see the brood. The colony can build into a large, active population over time under a single queen. It carries a painful sting and is rated Pro, so it is a species for keepers confident handling fast, defensive tropical ants with care.
Feeding
An omnivore with the keen eyesight typical of twig ants: foragers take sugars and liquids for themselves and bring insect prey back for the brood. Keep a sugar source ready and supply small insects through the week.

Housing & formicarium
Start the queen in a test tube, then move the colony on as it establishes. This is an arboreal, twig-nesting genus, so it favours narrow cavities and vertical structure: a slim nest with tight tunnels, or hollow stems anchored upright in the arena, suits it better than a wide flat chamber. Keep the nest warm and humid and add branches for climbing. Line the arena rim with fluon (PTFE) or talc and water, because these agile ants explore high and low. ANTonTOP formicaria and starter kits provide a cavity-style nest, arena and barrier as a ready set.
Climate & wintering
Match the steady warmth of a Brazilian rainforest. Hold the nest at 24 to 27 C and the arena at 25 to 29 C, with humidity at 65 to 80% in the nest and a slightly lower 55 to 70% in the arena. Warm one end so the colony keeps a gradient and can settle its brood wherever the temperature suits it best. No winter rest applies to this one; as a tropical ant it stays active and feeding the whole year round, so there is no cooling period to plan for.
Growth forecast + what you receive
Growth is moderate, but the ceiling is high. The colony takes its time through the founding stage, then steadily adds workers as it matures, with a well-established nest reaching up to 5,000 workers over time. You receive the queen with workers and brood, packed to travel and ready to move into a founding nest with narrow cavities to explore.
Did you know
- Pseudomyrmex ants have unusually large eyes and rely on sharp vision, hunting and dodging by sight in a way most ants cannot.
- The genus includes the famous acacia ants of the Americas, which live inside swollen thorns and defend their host tree against herbivores and vines.
- Their slim build, long legs and quick, darting movement give them a distinctly wasp-like look, fitting since ants and wasps share a common ancestry.
- They nest inside hollow twigs and dead stems, squeezing whole colonies into cavities barely wider than a worker.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pseudomyrmex lynceus good for beginners?
No, it is rated Pro and has a painful sting, so it suits experienced keepers.
Does this Brazilian twig ant need a winter rest?
No, it is tropical and stays active year-round; keep feeding all seasons.
How painful is the Pseudomyrmex lynceus sting?
It is painful, so treat it as a defensive species and handle the outworld carefully.
How large do twig-ant colonies get?
Up to 5,000 workers in a mature colony.
How big is the queen?
The queen is 8-9 mm, with workers at 6-8 mm.
How fast does it grow?
Moderately, reaching a large size over time.
What do these wasp-like ants eat?
Insects such as crickets and flies for protein, plus sugar water, nectar or jelly for energy.
How is it shipped?
As a queen with workers and brood, with a heat or cool pack, sent within 24 h with tracking for safe live arrival.
Keeping & shipping essentials
Escape prevention. Coat the inner rim of every open arena with fluon (PTFE), or use talc-and-water or an oil barrier as a backup, and keep a tight, fine-mesh lid on top. Check the barrier regularly, since dust, condensation and feeding debris break a fluon line over time. Keep tubing connectors tight and seal any gaps in the nest.
Keeping reminders. Always offer fresh water and never let the nest dry out completely. Give carbohydrates continuously and protein a few times a week, and remove uneaten insect prey within 24 hours before it moulds. Keep the formicarium out of direct sunlight and away from constant vibration, which stresses a young colony. A water-filled test tube plugged with cotton makes an ideal spare incubator whenever you need one.
Before you buy – do not rehouse too early. Have a test-tube setup or a small formicarium with an outworld and a working barrier ready before your colony arrives. A founding colony grows slowly at first, which is normal. Moving a small colony into a large nest too soon invites mould, mites and stress, and the workers die off one by one. Keep the colony in its open test tube on the arena, plug the nest entrance with cotton, and open up the next chambers only once the colony fills roughly 10-15% of the space.
