Apple green quartz sand for Asian and rainforest ant arenas
Livelier and brighter than grass green, apple green is a spring-green floor built for Asian and rainforest themes, the kind that come alive with bamboo, moss and tropical decor. The strong contrast against your ants and your decor is what makes coloured quartz worth choosing over plain sand. It is inert silica quartz, dyed with non-toxic colour and washed clean, supplied in an 8×4×2 cm bag and shipped from Poland with tracked EU, UK and worldwide delivery.
Why coloured quartz
Substrate sets the whole tone of an arena. A strong green base makes dark ants and pale decor stand out, pulls a themed scene together and photographs well. The grain is very fine, around 0.01–0.05 mm, well under 1 mm, so it behaves like natural fine sand: ants walk and forage on it comfortably, and most digging species tunnel in it readily. With the colour fixed to the grain, it stays put and won’t bleed when sprayed or rinsed.
Who it’s for
Keepers building an Asian, rainforest or simply colourful themed arena, anyone who wants their ants and decor to pop against the floor, and hobbyists layering substrates for a custom look. It suits arenas of all formats and doubles as terrarium and aquarium decor.
How to use it
Spread a 1–2 cm layer across the floor as standard. Use full colour for maximum impact, or blend with natural sand to mute it. It pairs naturally with moss stones and tropical-species arenas housing Pheidole, Polyrhachis and similar. As part of a 13-colour range, it mixes and matches for layered scenes.
Pairs well with
Miniature landmarks for a centrepiece, decorative moss stones for natural green, and the other quartz colours for layered, multi-tone scenes.
FAQ
Is the colour safe for ants?
Yes. It is inert quartz with a non-toxic colourant, safe in direct contact.
Will it bleed if it gets wet?
No. The colour is fixed to the grain, so spraying or rinsing won’t transfer colour.
How fine is the grain?
Very fine, about 0.01–0.05 mm, well under 1 mm, so it behaves like natural fine sand.
Can I mix it with natural sand?
Yes. Blending with natural sand for a subtler effect is common practice.
Will ants dig in it?
Most digging species — Messor, Lasius, Formica — tunnel in it just as they would in natural sand.
