Description

Arena Waste Bin – Small (4×3.5×3 cm)

The small Arena Waste Bin is a compact acrylic container designed to train ants to deposit their waste in a fixed location within the arena. Many ant species naturally create a designated midden (waste pile) away from the nest. This container encourages and concentrates that behaviour. Once the colony adopts it, dead workers, food remains, and debris end up almost exclusively in the bin – making arena cleaning a 30-second job instead of a full sweep.

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 4 × 3.5 × 3 cm
  • Material: acrylic
  • Colour: blue (this product)
  • Format: compact cube – suits small to medium arenas

When to Choose Small vs Medium

The small bin (this product) is sized for compact arenas (up to 20×20 cm) and colonies of small to medium worker count. For larger colonies or bigger arenas, the Medium Arena Waste Bin (5×3×2.5 cm, green) has a wider opening – easier for workers to deposit larger food remains.

How to Train Ants to Use It

Place the container in the arena, in the far corner from the nest entrance. Ants naturally deposit waste away from the living area, so the far corner is where the behaviour starts. To kickstart adoption, drop the first few pieces of arena waste (a dead worker, a piece of insect prey shell) inside the bin yourself. Within a few days, the colony will recognise the location as the waste zone and start using it consistently.

Care & Maintenance

Lift the bin out with tweezers, tip the contents into your waste, and wipe it with isopropyl alcohol before returning it to the arena. Acrylic scratches under abrasive scourers, so use a soft cloth only. Most keepers empty and wipe weekly, which keeps mould and mites out of the arena.

What’s in the Box

Frequently Asked Questions

Will every species use it?
Most do, especially species with strong midden behaviour (Camponotus, Messor, Lasius, Formica). Some small or low-worker species may take longer to adopt it.

How do I empty it?
Lift it out with tweezers, tap the contents into a paper or bin, wipe down with alcohol if needed, return it to the arena. Most keepers do this weekly.

Can I get other colours?
Container 1 is blue; the medium bin is green. We do not offer custom colours – the colour does not affect ant behaviour, only keeper aesthetics.
