Grey quartz sand for mountain and rock-themed ant arenas
Grey is the floor that holds a stone scene together. Its slate-to-volcanic tone ties rock peaks, moss stones and stone landmarks into a convincing mountain biotope, and it reads as natural stone ground without pulling focus. It is inert silica quartz, dyed with non-toxic colour and washed clean, with a very fine grain of roughly 0.01–0.05 mm (well under 1 mm). It comes in an 8×4×2 cm bag and ships from Poland across the EU, UK and worldwide.
What grey does in an arena
This is one of 13 colours in the range and the most versatile neutral. The colour is fixed to each grain rather than loosely coated, so spraying or rinsing won’t wash it into the water dish or stain the acrylic. As true quartz it holds a sculpted surface and does not break down with handling. A quiet stone-grey base lets darker decor and lighter ants stand out cleanly.
Who it’s for
Keepers building mountain, volcanic, slate and rock-themed arenas, and anyone who wants a neutral floor that does not pull focus. It pairs cleanly with stone landmarks and moss stones, and gives reddish or pale ants a calm backdrop.
How to use it
Pour a 1–2 cm layer across the floor, level it dry, and build decor on top. Tunnelling species such as Messor, Lasius and Formica work fine quartz much as they would natural sand, so a deeper bed gives visible burrowing. Pair it with moss stones and rock peaks for a mountain biotope, or blend with black sand for a darker volcanic tone.
Pairs well with
Moss stones and rock-peak landmarks for a mountain biotope, black quartz for a darker volcanic floor, and white decorative stones for contrast. Add stone miniatures for a complete rocky scene.
FAQ
Is the colour safe for ants?
Yes. It is inert quartz with a non-toxic colourant, fixed to the grain and safe in direct contact.
Will it bleed if the arena is sprayed?
No. The colour is bonded to each grain, so misting or rinsing won’t tint the water or acrylic.
Can I mix it with natural sand?
Yes. Blending with natural beige sand softens the grey toward a sandy-stone tone.
Will ants tunnel in it?
Most digging species — Messor, Lasius, Formica — tunnel in it much as they do in natural sand.
What themes suit it best?
Mountain, volcanic, slate and rock-themed arenas, where it works as natural-looking stone ground.
