Black quartz sand for high-contrast display arenas
If you keep ants partly to watch them, the floor changes how much you actually see. Against deep matte black, light-coloured ants like Camponotus and pale Messor majors read sharply, and white miniatures or white quartz stand out the way they never do on natural beige. It is inert silica quartz, dyed with non-toxic colour and washed clean, with a very fine grain of roughly 0.01–0.05 mm, well under 1 mm. It comes in an 8×4×2 cm bag and ships from Poland across the EU, UK and worldwide.
What black does in an arena
This is the darkest sand in the range, one of 13 colours. The black is fixed to each grain rather than coated loosely on top, so spraying or rinsing won’t wash colour into the water dish or stain the acrylic. Because it is true quartz and not a soft mineral, it holds a sculpted surface and does not break down with handling. Keepers reach for it when they want a striking, gallery-style arena or a clean backdrop for photography.
Who it’s for
Display arenas and biotopes that call for a striking, low-key floor: night-themed or volcanic looks, monochrome setups, and any arena housing light or reddish ants you want to show off. Pair it with light ants or white decor for the strongest effect; if full black runs too strong, cut it with natural sand for a charcoal tone.
How to use it
Pour a 1–2 cm layer across the floor, level it dry, and build decor on top. Tunnelling species such as Messor, Lasius and Formica work fine quartz much as they would natural sand, so a deeper bed gives visible burrowing. Run it edge to edge for full impact, or as a contrasting top layer over natural sand.
Pairs well with
White quartz and white decorative stones for a chessboard contrast, miniature landmarks and architectural figures, and moss stones for texture. Layer it with other quartz colours from the range for gradients and themed scenes.
FAQ
Is the colour safe for ants?
Yes. It is inert quartz with a non-toxic colourant, fixed to the grain and safe in direct contact.
Will it bleed if the arena is sprayed?
No. The colour is bonded to each grain, so misting or rinsing won’t tint the water or acrylic.
Can I mix it with natural sand?
Yes. Blending with natural beige sand is common and gives a softer charcoal effect instead of full black.
Will ants tunnel in it?
Most digging species — Messor, Lasius, Formica — tunnel in it much as they do in natural sand.
How much do I need?
For a 1–2 cm display layer, one 8×4×2 cm bag covers a small arena floor; add bags for larger arenas or deeper beds.
