Description

Grain Set Small — mixed seed food for harvester ants

A founding harvester colony eats little, so it should eat fresh. Grain Set Small is the starter quantity — built for queens with roughly 10–100 workers, and for trialling a new granivorous species before you buy a bigger pack. The blend is millet, poppy, sesame, flax and other grains, exactly the mix in our Medium and Large packs; only the amount differs. Workers husk the seeds, store them and mill them into “ant bread” for the brood. Natural seeds only, no chemical treatment. A good first food for young Messor, Pogonomyrmex and Aphaenogaster colonies. Ships from Poland with tracked EU, UK and worldwide delivery.

Why start small

A young colony gets through almost nothing, and a large pack would age before it was used. The Small size keeps the seed fresh, and it lets you watch which grains your particular colony reaches for before scaling up. Different workers favour different seeds, so a mix tells you more than any single grain would.

Who it is for

Founding harvester colonies of about 10–100 workers, and any keeper testing a new species. If you are raising a Messor or Pogonomyrmex from a queen and her first handful of workers, this is where to begin. When the colony settles in, the Medium and Large packs carry the same blend in larger amounts.

How to use it

Offer a small pinch in the arena or near the nest entrance. Workers ferry it to storage and mill it for the brood. Very small colonies struggle with whole grains, so crack a few seeds first or offer a pre-crushed mix until the colony grows workers big enough to husk them. Lift out old or damp seed before refilling so nothing moulds.

Storage

Sealed and dry, the seeds last well over a year. For a founding colony, put out only a few at a time and refresh them rather than leaving a heap to draw moisture. Let the arena dry between refills and clear any husks the workers toss aside.

Pairs well with

Seed is the staple, but a founding colony also takes a little sugar and protein while raising its first brood. Pair with our carbohydrate jellies and keep a small water source nearby. A test-tube setup or a compact formicarium fits a colony this size; step up to the Medium pack once it is established.

FAQ

My colony is tiny — are the seeds too big?
They can be at first. Crush a few grains or use a pre-crushed mix until the colony has larger workers that can husk whole seeds.

Will I be able to tell if my species accepts it?
That is part of the point of the Small pack. Watch the arena over a few days; granivores carry favoured seeds inside quickly.

Do omnivorous ants eat this?
Mostly no. Camponotus and Lasius prefer jelly and protein. Seeds are for granivores such as Messor and Pogonomyrmex.

How long does it keep?
Over a year when sealed and dry.

Which ants is it for?
Harvester (seed-eating) species — Messor, Pogonomyrmex, Aphaenogaster and Veromessor in the hobby.

Do you ship outside the EU?
Yes. We dispatch within 24 h from Poland with tracked delivery across the EU, the UK and worldwide.
