The XL is defined by scale. The formicarium is large-format rather than the compact nests in the smaller boxes, the accessory selection is the most generous we pack, and the species range is the widest, wide enough that an XL can carry a less common species you would not see in an S or M. That breadth is part of why people buy it: more in the box, and more chance of something out of the ordinary. Underneath the surprise is a real colony: the cheap novelty tanks ship a few workers and no queen and are finished in two or three weeks, whereas a Mystery Box XL is built around a living queen and a large-format formicarium, so the colony grows and keeps going for years. The surprise is in the species and the extras, never in the quality.

The XL is built around a beginner-to-intermediate colony, chosen to be rewarding to watch, a living science project that teaches patience, responsibility and biology, and pulls a child off the screen. We suggest it from around age 8 with an adult involved in feeding and watering; at XL level the species may be less common, which is part of the appeal, but full guidance always comes with it. Most presents are forgotten by January; a living colony is bigger by spring, and the XL adds the thrill of not knowing what is inside, which makes it a standout gift for a curious child, a teenager, a nature lover, or the person who seems to have everything. Order around 7 to 14 days ahead of a birthday or Christmas and we will time the dispatch. A live colony is best given as a family gift, with a parent on board. The colony arrives in a secure transport tube with a formicarium matched to it. Connect the tube to the entrance, keep the setup warm and quiet, and let the colony cross in its own time, usually within a few hours to two days. Detailed instructions specific to the species are always in the box: temperature, humidity, feeding and any winter rest. As a rule, keep the formicarium humid where the species needs it, out of direct sun, and feed what is provided plus a little sugar water for energy. Could I receive a species I don’t know how to keep?

Is the XL suitable as a gift for a beginner?
Yes, with the care instructions provided. If the recipient is brand new to ant keeping, the S, M or L boxes are an easier first step.

How is the XL different from the L?
The XL is the largest and most complete, with the most generous accessories, a large-format formicarium and the widest species range, including rarer options. The L is a step below but still substantially complete.

Can I request a specific species?
