You give a real, living colony plus the surprise of which species and setup it turns out to be. Order around 7 to 14 days ahead of a birthday or Christmas and we’ll time the dispatch. A live colony is best given as a family gift, with a parent on board.

Every Mystery Box XL at this level is built around a beginner-friendly colony, chosen to be straightforward to keep and rewarding to watch – a real living science project that teaches patience, responsibility and biology, and pulls a child away from the screen. We select calm, observable species suitable for the box level, and full species-specific care instructions are always included. We suggest it from around age 8 with an adult involved in feeding and watering. The species you receive is a surprise, but it is always one we’d happily hand to a newcomer.

Every box arrives with the colony in a secure transport tube and a formicarium matched to it. Connect the transport tube to the formicarium entrance, keep the setup warm and quiet, and let the colony move across in its own time – usually within a few hours to two days. Offer the food included and follow the species-specific care sheet for temperature, humidity and feeding. Nothing about the surprise makes setup harder: it works the same way as any of our standard kits.

Care depends on the species you receive, and a printed care sheet specific to it is always in the box – temperature, humidity, feeding and any winter rest, in plain language. As a rule, keep the formicarium humid where the species needs it, out of direct sun, and feed the food provided plus a little sugar water for energy. Every colony is covered by our live arrival guarantee. The ants travel in a secure transport tube with moisture and food, and we’ve shipped thousands of colonies across Europe. We ship year-round in seasonal thermal packaging, a heat pack in winter and a cool gel pack in summer. Inside Poland we send via InPost parcel locker, across the EU via DHL, and we deliver to other European countries too. If anything arrives damaged or the queen doesn’t survive transit, contact us and we’ll put it right.

A gel ant farm is a toy. A Mystery Box XL is a real, queen-led colony, and the difference shows within the first month. The cheap “ant farms” sold as novelties are usually gel or sand tanks with a voucher for a handful of workers and no queen – normally over in two to three weeks. A Mystery Box XL is built around a living queen and a real formicarium, so the colony grows and keeps going for years. The surprise is in the species and the extras, never in the quality.

Could I receive a species I do not know how to keep?
Care instructions specific to the species received are always included. At XL level the species may be less common – that is part of the appeal – but full guidance is always provided.

Is the XL suitable as a gift for a beginner?
Yes, with the care sheet provided. If the recipient is brand new to ant keeping, the S, M or L boxes are an easier first step.

Can I request a specific species?
No – the surprise is the heart of the product. If you want to choose your own species and setup, browse the species range and standard kits instead.

Is an ant farm cruel?
A queenless gel farm is the problem, because the workers die within weeks. A queen-led colony with the right food, humidity and space is the ethical way to keep ants, and every Mystery Box XL is built that way.

Does it make a good gift?
Yes – the surprise is part of the appeal. Order 7 to 14 days before the date, tell us it is a present, and we will time the dispatch.

How long does delivery take?
1 to 2 days inside Poland (InPost), 2 to 3 days to Germany, France, Netherlands and Belgium (DHL), and 3 to 5 days to other European countries.
