Description

Want a colony with room to become something substantial? Kit Module 20×20 is our largest modular kit, and it builds staged growth right in. You get a 20×20 cm acrylic nest and arena with eight lockable entrances and a four-stage latch system, a live Messor structor colony (laying queen plus ~15–40 workers), Grain Set S seeds, 2× decorative sand, tweezers and a feeder. Those four latches let a starting colony settle into one corner first, then spread across the full nest, then take on more clipped-in modules. This is a real queen-led colony that lasts years, not a gel toy that lasts days.

Description

Kit Module 20×20 — the large modular ant farm kit with staged four-latch expansion

Kit Module 20×20 is the biggest setup in the ANTonTOP modular range, the one to choose when you want a colony with room to become something substantial. Inside you get a 20 × 20 cm acrylic nest with a matching arena, eight lockable entrances, a four-stage latch system, a living Messor structor harvester colony, and the seeds to get it fed. Those four latches are what make a large nest work for a small colony: open a single section at a time, so a starting colony beds into one corner before it fills the full space. And the modular design never runs out of headroom — clip on more nests and arenas through standard tubing whenever the colony keeps pushing.

What’s in the kit

  • Modular Nest 20×20 cm — large acrylic modular nest, 9 mm chambers, eight lockable entrances, four latches for staged expansion, two humidification chambers, 10 mm tube ports
  • Arena 20×20 cm — matching large modular arena for foraging and decoration
  • Live Messor structor colony — a laying queen and roughly 15 to 40 workers
  • Grain Set S — mixed seeds for the first weeks
  • 2 × decorative sand and arena decorations — a natural floor and foraging features
  • Tweezers and a feeder — brood-safe handling, plus a feeder for sugar water
  • Live arrival guarantee — on the colony, with full care instructions provided

A real colony, not a gel toy

Buy a gel or sand novelty farm and you get a voucher for a few workers, no queen, and no way to raise new ants — so the whole thing is over in two to three weeks. Kit Module 20×20 begins with a real laying queen instead, which is why the colony keeps growing for years. The acrylic is the same 3 mm layered stock that runs through the whole range, complete with proper humidification and screw-locked entrances. The price reflects that: this is the opening of a hobby, not a throwaway novelty.

Who it’s for, and as a gift

Few science projects a child can keep are as good as a living colony, and none of them are bigger by spring. Messor structor makes a popular beginner species for good reason: being a harvester it lives on seeds, so there are no crickets or mealworms to handle; its workers don’t sting; and once the locks are shut the nest is escape-proof, meaning everything happens through the acrylic with zero contact. The queen shrugs off early mistakes, and the colony is size-polymorphic — small minors working next to big-headed majors that crack the toughest seeds. We put the starting age at around 8, with an adult handling the weekly water and feed, and it lands best as a family gift. Planning it for a birthday or Christmas? Order 7 to 14 days ahead and let us know, so we can time the dispatch.

Setting up and feeding

Join the nest to the arena with the tubing and put a little moisture into the humidification chamber. Leave the latches shut so the colony starts inside part of the nest, and drape a dark cloth over it while it settles. Fit the transport tube to the nest entrance and then leave it be; the ants make the crossing when they’re ready, usually somewhere between a few hours and two days, at a calm 22–26 °C, and you open the next latch once they’ve filled the space. Seeds do the heavy lifting and the included Grain Set S sees you through the first weeks; offer a dish of sugar water or diluted honey as numbers climb, keep the chamber lightly damp, and clear away uneaten seeds every 3 to 4 days. The 20×20 is the largest standard modular nest, yet the system never truly caps out — clip on more nests and arenas as the colony keeps growing.

Delivery and live arrival guarantee

Every colony is covered by our live arrival guarantee and travels in a secure tube with moisture and food, shipped year-round in seasonal thermal packaging, a heat pack in winter and a cool gel pack in summer. Delivery runs 1 to 2 days inside Poland (InPost); 2 to 3 days to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium (DHL); 3 to 5 days to France and the rest of the EU; 5 to 9 days to the United Kingdom; worldwide tracked and quoted at checkout. A video guide is at youtube.com/@AntOnTop; if the queen doesn’t survive transit, send an unboxing video and we’ll put it right.

FAQ

How big a colony does the 20×20 suit, and can I expand it?
A large, actively growing colony. Use the four latches to open the nest in stages so a smaller colony stays settled, and add more nests and arenas via standard tubing when it fills the space.

Is it safe for children, and what age?
Yes. Messor structor does not sting or bite. Watching through the acrylic is safe from around age 8 with an adult.

Is an ant farm cruel?
A queenless gel farm is the problem, because the workers die within weeks. A queen-led colony kept with the right food, humidity and space is the ethical way to keep ants.

Do these ants need hibernation?
None needed — our Messor colonies are kept active year-round, so there is nothing to manage. Ask about a tropical species if you’d rather skip it.

How long does delivery take?
1 to 2 days inside Poland (InPost); 2 to 3 days to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium (DHL); 3 to 5 days to France and the rest of the EU; 5 to 9 days to the United Kingdom. Worldwide is tracked and quoted at checkout.
