Digital thermometer for formicariums — LCD, ±0.5 °C accuracy
The single cheapest tool that changes how well a colony grows. This compact digital thermometer puts an accurate reading next to your nest on a clear 36 × 17 mm LCD, measures to ±0.5 °C, and refreshes every second so you catch temperature shifts as they happen. It sits on or beside any formicarium, terrarium or breeding setup where monitoring is part of routine care. The coin-cell battery is included, so it works the moment it arrives. Ships from Poland with tracked EU, UK and worldwide delivery.
Why temperature monitoring matters
Most ant species have a specific optimal range for activity and brood development. Too cold and the colony turns sluggish: brood stalls, foraging stops, egg production drops. Too warm and brood can die of heat stress. The gap between a growing colony and a stagnant one is often only a few degrees, which you cannot judge with a finger. Read the real temperature and you can heat, cool or set hibernation conditions with confidence instead of hope.
Who it’s for
Every ant keeper, beginner to advanced. It is essential if you run a heating mat and want to confirm what that heat is doing, if you keep tropical species needing 26-28 °C in the active season, or if you hibernate Mediterranean and temperate species at a cool 10-15 °C. Even keepers of hardy room-temperature species gain from knowing their room really sits where they think it does.
How to use it
Place it on top of or next to the formicarium, wherever you want the reading. The device reads the air around it rather than the formicarium surface, so position it where that air is closest to the nest interior. For sealed or insulated setups where ambient and interior diverge, use the probe version instead, which puts a sensor inside the nest.
Care and maintenance
Wipe the display and housing with a dry or barely damp cloth, and never let moisture reach the battery compartment. Replace the coin-cell battery when the display dims or readings turn erratic — typically after one to two years of continuous use. Kept in a dry drawer, it runs reliably for years.
Pairs well with
A heating mat, to actively manage the temperature you are reading. The 2-in-1 thermometer and hygrometer if you also need humidity for tropical or rainforest species. The probe version for sealed nests where interior conditions differ from the room. Tropical species from our live ant catalogue, where 26-28 °C in the nest zone is the usual target.
FAQ
Does it measure humidity too?
No, temperature only. For both together, see the 2-in-1 thermometer and hygrometer.
Can I put it inside the formicarium?
It is not made for direct contact with ants or moisture. Place it just outside, next to the nest. For interior measurement, use the probe version.
What temperature should my colony be at?
It depends on the species. Temperate European species do well at room temperature (20-24 °C); tropical species need 26-28 °C in the active season; Mediterranean species want a cool winter (10-15 °C) to hibernate. Check the species page for exact ranges.
How long does the battery last?
Typically one to two years of continuous use, depending on refresh frequency. A replaceable coin-cell is included.
How accurate is it?
To ±0.5 °C, more than enough to manage any ant species safely, with a one-second refresh so you see changes as they happen.
Do you ship outside the EU?
Yes. Out of Poland with tracked delivery across the EU, the UK and worldwide.
