Digital Thermometer for Formicariums – LCD ±0.3 °C
A compact digital thermometer with a clearly readable 36 × 17 mm LCD display. Accurate to ±0.3 °C with a 1-second refresh rate – fast enough to detect temperature changes as they happen. Designed for placement on or next to formicariums, terrariums, and breeding setups where temperature monitoring is part of routine colony care.
Specifications
- Display: LCD, 36 × 17 mm
- Accuracy: ±0.3 °C
- Refresh rate: 1 second
- Measurement: ambient temperature (no probe)
- Power: coin-cell battery (replaceable)
- Use: formicariums, terrariums, room monitoring
Why Temperature Monitoring Matters
Most ant species have a specific optimal temperature range for colony activity and brood development. Too cold and the colony becomes sluggish – brood development stalls, workers stop foraging, and egg production drops. Too warm and brood can die from heat stress. The difference between an active, growing colony and a stagnant one is often just a few degrees, and you cannot estimate that with a finger. A thermometer is the cheapest tool that has the biggest effect on a colony’s success.
How to Use It
Place the thermometer on top of or next to the formicarium – wherever you want to measure. For most species, measuring ambient air next to the nest is sufficient. The thermometer reads the air around it, not the surface of the formicarium, so position it where the air is closest in temperature to the nest interior.
For sealed or insulated setups where ambient and interior temperatures diverge, use the probe version (Thermometer + Hygrometer with Probe) instead.
Compatibility
- Works alongside all formicarium types
- Pair with our heating mat to actively manage the temperature you are reading
- For tropical species in our live ant catalogue, target 26–28 °C in the nest zone
Care & Maintenance
Wipe the display and housing with a dry or barely damp cloth, and never let moisture reach the battery compartment. Replace the coin-cell battery when the display dims or readings turn erratic. Kept in a dry drawer, the thermometer runs reliably for years.
What’s in the Box
- 1 × digital thermometer with LCD display
- Coin-cell battery included
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it measure humidity too?
No – this is temperature only. For combined temperature + humidity, see the Thermometer + Hygrometer 2-in-1.
Can I put it inside the formicarium?
The device itself is not designed for direct contact with ants or moisture. Place it outside, next to the nest. For interior measurement, use the probe version.
What temperature should my colony be at?
Depends on the species. Temperate European species are happy at room temperature (20–24 °C). Tropical species need 26–28 °C in the active season. Mediterranean species need a cool winter (10–15 °C) for hibernation. Check the species page on our site for exact ranges.
How long does the battery last?
Typically 1–2 years of continuous use depending on display refresh frequency.
