Monomorium latastei is a Chilean ant with comparatively large workers and big multi-queen colonies, a step up for keepers ready for a populous setup.
Why this species
Monomorium latastei offers the fast, multi-queen growth its genus is known for, but with noticeably bigger workers that are far easier to watch as they forage. Running several queens, the colony builds numbers quickly and carries on through the loss of a single one, so a large, active population comes together steadily. It comes from Chile in South America and does well in moderate warmth and humidity. The combination of size and scale makes it a satisfying choice for a keeper ready to manage a busy colony rather than a small starter.
Feeding
An omnivore with larger workers than most of its genus. They keep the colony running on sugars and ferry small insect prey back for the brood, so steady sugar plus regular protein keeps growth fast.

Housing & formicarium
Found the colony in a test tube and keep the closure tight against these small foragers. Once the early workers cover the floor, move them to a humid plaster or acrylic nest with a close fit and a roomy, slightly drier arena, as the colony can grow large. Upgrade and connect modules as the space fills, which may happen quickly. Edge the arena with a fluon (PTFE) barrier; oil or talc-and-water also work. ANTonTOP formicaria and starter kits deliver the nest, arena and barrier as one matched set sized for a young, growing colony of this species.
Climate & wintering
A moderate setup keeps it happy: nest 23-26 °C, arena 24-28 °C, with nest humidity at 55-70% and the arena at 40-60%. Warm one end only so the colony can pick a warmer or cooler spot along the gradient. No winter rest is required, so the ants stay active year-round on steady feeding.
Growth forecast + what you receive
Multiple queens drive quick growth, and the colony can climb to up to 100,000 workers. Your colony arrives as a fertilised queen with workers and brood, often with more than one queen.
Did you know
- At 4.5-5 mm the workers are noticeably larger than most Monomorium, which makes the colony far easier to watch.
- It is one of the South American members of a genus better known for its tropical tramp ants.
- Several queens share the nest, so the colony shrugs off the loss of any single one.
- As an opportunist it takes a broad mix of sugars and small prey rather than specialising.
Frequently asked questions
Is Monomorium latastei good for beginners?
It is rated Intermediate, more for the large active colony than for difficult care; better with some experience.
Does Monomorium latastei need a winter rest?
No, hibernation is not required. Keep it active year-round with steady feeding and stable temperatures.
Does it sting or bite?
It has a sting and a mild bite, but it is harmless in practice.
How big can the colony get?
Up to 100,000 workers, helped by multiple queens.
How large is the queen?
The queen measures 6-8 mm and workers 4.5-5 mm, larger than most Monomorium.
How quickly does the colony build up?
Fast, as a polygyne warmth-loving species.
What do these ants eat?
Sugar water and nectar or jelly readily, plus small insects for brood; it does not take seeds.
How is it shipped and will it arrive alive?
It ships as a queen with workers and brood, with a heat or cool pack, dispatched within 24 h with tracking for a safe live arrival.
Keeping & shipping essentials
Escape prevention. Coat the inner rim of every open arena with fluon (PTFE), or use talc-and-water or an oil barrier as a backup, and keep a tight, fine-mesh lid on top. Check the barrier regularly, since dust, condensation and feeding debris break a fluon line over time. Keep tubing connectors tight and seal any gaps in the nest.
Keeping reminders. Always offer fresh water and never let the nest dry out completely. Give carbohydrates continuously and protein a few times a week, and remove uneaten insect prey within 24 hours before it moulds. Keep the formicarium out of direct sunlight and away from constant vibration, which stresses a young colony. A water-filled test tube plugged with cotton makes an ideal spare incubator whenever you need one.
Before you buy – do not rehouse too early. Have a test-tube setup or a small formicarium with an outworld and a working barrier ready before your colony arrives. A founding colony grows slowly at first, which is normal. Moving a small colony into a large nest too soon invites mould, mites and stress, and the workers die off one by one. Keep the colony in its open test tube on the arena, plug the nest entrance with cotton, and open up the next chambers only once the colony fills roughly 10-15% of the space.
