Soft tweezers — gentle padded-tip handling for ant brood and live ants

Soft tweezers (15 cm) are made for the most delicate task in ant keeping: moving living brood and workers without injuring them. The padded silicone tips grip gently, enough to hold a larva or worker securely but not enough to crush it. Standard metal tweezers, even fine precision ones, concentrate force at a hard point; soft tweezers spread that grip across a padded surface, which makes them the safest tool for direct brood contact. The anti-static silicone tips are safe around brood, and they wipe clean with isopropyl alcohol between species. Ships from Poland with tracked EU, UK and worldwide delivery.

Why padded tips matter

A hard tip applies its force along a thin edge, so light pressure on a larva can cut or crush it. A padded silicone tip distributes the same grip across a wide contact area, so the brood is supported rather than pinched. That is what lets you move pupae, older larvae, workers and queens, and handle newly eclosed workers before their cuticle hardens, without the constant worry of damage.

Who it’s for

Any keeper who moves brood regularly: transferring pupae from a test tube to a formicarium, relocating larvae during nest maintenance, or shifting individual workers during setup. For placing food or removing debris, standard tweezers are enough. Soft tweezers are specifically for direct contact with living material.

Soft versus ultra-soft

Soft is the right choice for most brood handling: pupae, older larvae, workers and queens. If you regularly handle eggs or L1/L2 larvae, or keep small fragile species such as Pheidole and Tetramorium, add the ultra-soft pair, which has an even softer tip and lower pressure for the most delicate material.

How to use them

Grip near the joint for fine pressure control. Approach the brood slowly, slide the soft tips under or around the larva or worker, and close just enough to lift. Move at the same height, do not lift higher than necessary, and never drop brood from above onto a hard surface.

Care and maintenance

Wipe with isopropyl alcohol between species and after each session involving brood. Avoid harsh detergents and prolonged heat, since silicone pads soften and degrade. Clean by hand only, never boil them or put them in a dishwasher. Store dry, and replace the tweezers when the pads no longer return to shape under light pressure.

Pairs well with

A magnifying loupe for brood inspection during transfers. Ultra-soft tweezers for eggs and very early larvae. A glass founding tube and a heating mat for the founding stage. ESD anti-static tweezers for static-sensitive work in dry winter conditions.

FAQ

Can I crush a larva with soft tweezers?
With normal grip pressure, no: the soft tips spread force across a wide contact area. You would have to squeeze hard on purpose to cause damage. Standard precision tweezers, by contrast, can cut a larva with light pressure.

Are they magnetic?
The body is stainless steel, so slightly magnetic but not strongly. It is not an issue for ant keeping.

How do I clean them between colonies?
Wipe with isopropyl alcohol, which kills most pathogens without harming the silicone. Avoid boiling and dishwashers, which degrade the tip pads.

Soft or ultra-soft — which do I need?
Soft is enough for pupae, older larvae and workers. Choose ultra-soft for eggs, L1/L2 larvae, or the brood of small fragile species.

Are they safe for live workers?
Yes. The padded tips hold workers gently without crushing, which makes them ideal for relocating individual ants during setup.

Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We dispatch from Poland with tracked delivery across the EU, the UK and worldwide.
