About This Landmark
The Empire State Building was built in just 410 days during 1930–1931 – record-breaking construction speed for a 102-storey, 381 m skyscraper. It was the tallest building in the world until 1970, when the World Trade Center’s North Tower surpassed it. Designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon in Art Deco style, the building’s 86th-floor observation deck has appeared in dozens of films (most famously King Kong in 1933). The mooring mast on top was originally intended for airships, but only ever served one – the wind currents made docking impossible.
