Description
Bright sky blue, the unconventional choice, and that is the whole point. A blue floor gives an arena a striking, instantly recognisable identity that natural substrate can’t, and pairs with white miniatures for beach, sky and water scenes. Very fine ~0.01–0.05 mm inert silica quartz, non-toxic colour fixed to each grain, safe in direct ant contact. Pour a 1–2 cm bed, or temper it with natural sand. One of 13 quartz colours, 8×4×2 cm bag.
Build an arena floor nobody else has.

Blue quartz sand for beach, sky and water ant arenas
Blue is rare in ant keeping, and that is exactly why keepers use it. A bright sky-blue floor gives an arena a striking, recognisable identity that no natural substrate can, and it makes natural-coloured ants and white decor stand out against it. It is inert silica quartz, dyed with non-toxic colour and washed clean, with a very fine grain of roughly 0.01–0.05 mm (well under 1 mm). It comes in an 8×4×2 cm bag and ships from Poland across the EU, UK and worldwide.
What blue does in an arena
This is one of 13 colours in the range and the boldest. The colour is fixed to each grain rather than loosely coated, so spraying or rinsing won’t wash blue into the water dish or stain the acrylic. As true quartz it holds a sculpted surface and does not break down with handling. Paired with sand and white architecture, it builds beach, sky and water scenes you cannot get from natural substrate.
Who it’s for
Display arenas, themed biotopes and photography setups that call for a bold, memorable floor: coastal and sky themes, fantasy builds, and high-contrast scenes for light or reddish ants. Combine it with white miniatures for a beach-sky look, or temper it with natural sand if full blue runs too strong.
How to use it
Pour a 1–2 cm layer across the floor, level it dry, and build decor on top. Tunnelling species such as Messor, Lasius and Formica work fine quartz much as they would natural sand, so a deeper bed gives visible burrowing. Use it edge to edge for full colour, or as a contrasting band over natural sand.
Pairs well with
White quartz and white decorative stones for a beach-and-water scene, miniature landmarks and architectural figures, and moss stones for texture. Layer it with turquoise and white from the range for sky-to-sea gradients.
FAQ
Is the colour safe for ants?
Yes. It is inert quartz with a non-toxic colourant, fixed to the grain and safe in direct contact.
Will it bleed if the arena is sprayed?
No. The colour is bonded to each grain, so misting or rinsing won’t tint the water or acrylic.
Can I mix it with natural sand?
Yes. Blending with natural beige sand gives a softer, paler blue instead of full saturation.
Will ants tunnel in it?
Most digging species — Messor, Lasius, Formica — tunnel in it much as they do in natural sand.
How much do I need?
For a 1–2 cm display layer, one 8×4×2 cm bag covers a small arena floor; add bags for larger arenas or deeper beds.
