Description
Deep, fiery red that turns a plain tub into a volcanic or Martian habitat, with light-coloured workers and brood standing out against the heat. Very fine ~0.01–0.05 mm inert silica quartz, non-toxic colour locked to every grain, so it never smears when wet. Lay a 1–2 cm floor, or pair it with black quartz for a lava-rock scene. One of 13 quartz colours, in an 8×4×2 cm bag.

Red quartz sand for volcanic and Martian ant arenas
A deep red floor sets a mood no other colour can. It turns an ordinary tub into a volcanic or Martian habitat and throws light-coloured workers and brood into sharp relief against the heat. It is washed silica quartz coloured with a non-toxic, fixed dye, supplied in an 8×4×2 cm bag and shipped sealed from Poland across the EU, UK and worldwide. The grain is very fine at about 0.01–0.05 mm, well under 1 mm, so most digging species walk on it, carry it and tunnel through it just as they would in natural sand.
What red does in an arena
Contrast and drama are what this colour buys, and a fiery base reads as a deliberate, finished build on the shelf. The colour is bonded to each grain rather than dusted on, so misting, condensation or a drinking spill won’t smear it or stain the glass. It stays inert, with no effect on humidity chemistry and no reaction with food — all the visual drama, none of the downsides of dyed organic substrate.
Who it’s for
Display keepers and hobbyists building a volcanic, Martian or high-drama arena, and anyone who wants a formicarium that looks finished. It suits founding setups and mature colonies across every kept genus: a rich base under dark ants, sharp relief under pale ones such as some Camponotus or Messor majors.
How to use it
Spread an even 1–2 cm layer for a primary floor. To soften it, blend with natural sand; to mark a path or feeding spot, lay it as a band over a neutral base. For a lava-rock theme, pair it with black accents and a few raised stones. Keep it drier where you want it loose, lightly dampen it where it needs to hold around decor.
Pairs well with
Black quartz and raised stones for a lava-rock scene, plus miniature landmarks, moss stones and decorative gravel. Within the 13-colour range, set red against white for graphic contrast or layer it for multi-tone floors. Coloured stones add rocky texture, and acrylic or 3D-printed drinking bowls sit firmly on the sand.
FAQ
Is red quartz sand safe for ants?
Yes. It is inert silica quartz with a non-toxic, fixed colourant, safe in direct contact with queens, brood and workers.
Will the colour bleed when wet?
No. It is bonded to each grain, so misting or a spill won’t transfer colour or stain the glass.
Will my ants tunnel in it?
Most digging species — Messor, Lasius, Formica and similar — tunnel and forage in it like natural sand, thanks to the ~0.01–0.05 mm grain.
Can I mix it with other colours?
Yes. Natural sand mutes the tone, and black pairs with it for a lava look.
How far does one bag go?
The 8×4×2 cm bag suits accents and small arenas; use several or top up for a deeper layer.
A note on care: each item is built for a specific job — please use it only as intended. Responsibility for correct, safe use rests with the keeper; ANTonTOP accepts no liability for misuse or damage from improper use.
