Description

Most nests come with the chambers cut for you. The DigFix Nest Plate S (23 × 3 × 16 cm) hands that job to the colony — its nest section is packed with firm DigFix sponge substrate the ants tunnel themselves, building a gallery network all their own behind a full-width window. Two 14 mm holes connect a test tube on the nest side and an arena on the foraging side. Built for medium and large digging species. Made in Poland.

Description

DigFix Nest Plate S — natural digging formicarium with DigFix excavation substrate

The DigFix Nest Plate S is a nest that comes empty on purpose. At 23 × 3 × 16 cm it works on a different principle to acrylic or gypsum: instead of pre-made chambers, its nest section is filled with DigFix, a firm, porous, mouldable sponge substrate the ants excavate for themselves. The colony tunnels its own galleries and carries brood into self-dug chambers, all on full display through a full-width observation window. Made in Poland for medium and large digging species, shipped year-round with heat or cool packs as the season needs.

Why the DigFix digging system works

DigFix holds both its shape and its moisture. Ants tunnel into it exactly as they would into natural soil, hollowing out galleries and chambers wherever the colony decides: there are no fixed rooms, so the nest grows organically and no two DigFix nests end up alike. The full-width window turns the whole thing into a living cross-section, and watching a colony excavate is, for many keepers, the best part of keeping a digging species. It suits medium and large digging species, the kind that treat a smooth acrylic nest as a temporary stop and would far rather burrow. Hand a natural digger a block of DigFix and it settles in fast. It is an intermediate nest, best for keepers who enjoy a hands-on, naturalistic setup over the simplest plug-and-go option.

Humidity and care

Because the whole nest body is a moisture reservoir, it manages its own micro-climate better than most moulded nests, holding water like soil to keep an even, dig-able dampness throughout. Keep the substrate lightly and evenly moist by dampening it through a connected tube or directly, spot-clean the connected arena, and wipe the acrylic frame to keep the window clear. The colony maintains the nest itself as it digs and rearranges.

Setup and escape protection

Moisten the DigFix substrate, connect a test tube with the founding colony to the 14 mm hole on the nest side and an arena to the hole on the foraging side, and let the ants start tunnelling. They take to it on their own, no coaxing needed, and a well-fitted arena and tubing keep the colony contained while it digs.

Pairs well with

A water-charged 15 mm test tube houses the founding colony, an ANTonTOP outworld or arena gives them somewhere to forage, and standard connection tubing ties it together. Medium and large digging species are the natural match.

FAQ

Do the ants really dig it themselves?
Yes — DigFix is a firm, porous substrate the colony excavates into galleries and chambers of its own design. There are no pre-made rooms.

Which species suit a digging nest?
Medium and large natural diggers get the most from it. Smooth-nest species can use it too, but dedicated diggers truly thrive in it.

How do I keep it humid?
The substrate holds moisture like soil — dampen it through a connected tube or directly and it stays evenly moist for the colony to dig and live in.

How do I connect it to the rest of a setup?
Two 14 mm tubing holes take a test tube on the nest side and an arena on the foraging side, so it drops straight into a complete setup.

Is it beginner-friendly?
It is an intermediate nest — a little more hands-on than a smooth acrylic module, and very rewarding for keepers who want to watch natural excavation.

Do you ship outside Poland?
Yes — tracked delivery across the EU, UK and worldwide, dispatched within 24 hours from Poland with heat or cool packs as the season needs.

A note on care: each item is built for a specific job — please use it only as intended. Responsibility for correct, safe use rests with the keeper; ANTonTOP accepts no liability for misuse or damage from improper use.
