Formicarium Dragon — a large gypsum nest with a wild, organic interior

Dragon is the showpiece of the ANTonTOP large-format gypsum range. Where other nests use rectangular rooms or flowing corridors, Dragon’s chambers are sculptural and irregular — varied in shape, depth and size, in a pattern that echoes the natural underground architecture wild colonies dig for themselves. The result is the most striking, behaviourally rich nest interior we make, with the deep, even humidity that cast gypsum provides.

Why the Formicarium Dragon

A nest shaped like the real thing gives a colony more to work with — varied chambers to claim for brood, food and quarters — and gives you a genuinely beautiful display. Dragon pairs that organic interior with five humidity chambers and four-stage latch control, so it is as practical as it is striking.

Who can live in it

Dragon is built for established colonies of roughly 500–1200 workers, including humidity-loving species that thrive in a large gypsum nest. Move a maturing colony in and watch it settle into the sculptural chambers.

Beginner lifehack: match the space to the colony

Even in a large nest, keep the colony in as little space as possible at first. Use the four latches to open sections in stages so the nest always feels right-sized to the colony.

How the humidity system works

Fill the humidity chambers and the gypsum wicks moisture into the surrounding chambers, holding an even gradient the colony can choose from. Top up the water every few days; the stone keeps the climate stable with none of the condensation swings of sealed acrylic.

Ventilation and mold prevention

Breathable gypsum plus light airflow keeps the nest fresh. Avoid over-watering, clear leftover food promptly, and leave a waterer empty for a day if a chamber gets too damp.

Escape protection

The fitted lid and arena walls keep workers contained. For tiny or climbing species, a thin band of anti-escape fluid around the arena rim adds extra security.

Assembly

Dragon arrives clean and ready. Rinse the gypsum, let it take up water, connect a tube if joining an outworld, and populate — no curing, no fuss.

Arena — sand, decorations, personalisation

Dress the integrated arena with sand, a stone or some moss to make a tidy foraging space and a display piece. Keep it light so feeding and cleaning stay easy.

Handy tools and feeding

Pair Dragon with a drinking dish, protein and carbohydrate jelly, and soft tweezers for clean feeding. A tube connection lets you add an arena or link nests as the colony grows.

Care and cleaning

Gypsum is sturdy and easy to wipe down. Spot-clean the arena, refresh the water, and don’t force the latches while the colony is active.

Delivery and support

Shipped year-round with heat or cool packs and a live-arrival guarantee — DHL across the EU, InPost in Poland, EMS worldwide. Questions on set-up or species fit? The ANTonTOP team keeps ants too and is glad to help.

Expansion — when and how to grow

Open the four latches in sequence as the colony fills each section. When the whole nest is in use, connect a second arena or a modular nest through the 10 mm port to keep growing at the colony’s pace.

Did you know?

Wild ant nests are never grid-like — colonies excavate chambers in organic, branching patterns shaped by need. Dragon’s irregular layout invites that same natural behaviour, so the colony builds something closer to a real underground nest.
