Description

Kit Spoko — a complete mid-size ant farm kit with a real queen colony

Kit Spoko is the step up in footprint. The Formicarium Spoko measures 20 × 15 cm, with plenty of floor space, and it opens in two stages thanks to a twin-latch system, so a small colony settles in a sized-down section now and spreads as it grows. The box ships complete: a living Messor structor colony, seed food, two pots of arena sand, two decorations and tweezers, ready to keep the day it arrives. It is a mid-size home a colony grows into over a year or two, reaching roughly 400–600 workers.

A real colony, not a gel toy

The cheap novelty farms are gel or sand tanks with a voucher for a handful of workers and no queen, over in two or three weeks: a few tunnels, then nothing. Kit Spoko is built around a laying queen, so the colony replaces its losses and grows for years, in the same 3 mm layered acrylic used across the ANTonTOP range with a screw-locked lid instead of a loose clip. The twin latches are what make a 20 × 15 cm nest suitable for a colony that starts at 15 to 40 workers: open one section, introduce the colony, and they occupy a space matched to their numbers; as they fill it, release the second latch and the nest roughly doubles, with the two humidification chambers (one per section) keeping both halves at the right moisture level. A hobby, not a toy.

Who it’s for, and as a gift

A living colony is one of the best science projects a child can keep at home, teaching patience and real biology away from the screen. Messor structor is a popular beginner species and child-safe: as a harvester it lives on seeds, so there are no crickets or mealworms to buy, store or handle; the queen is hardy and forgives early mistakes; the workers forage in daylight; and the colony is size-polymorphic, small minors beside big-headed majors that crack the toughest seeds, milling them into a stored paste keepers call “ant bread”. The workers do not sting or bite, and the nest is escape-proof behind clear acrylic, so we suggest it from around age 8 with an adult on the weekly water and feed. As a gift it is bigger by spring, not forgotten by January; order around 7 to 14 days ahead so we can time the dispatch, ideally as a family gift with a parent on board. We keep our Messor colonies active all year, so no winter rest is needed; prefer a tropical species instead? Message us before checkout.

Setting up and feeding

Add water through the humidification port with the syringe until the sponge feels damp, and cover the nest with a dark cloth while the colony settles. Connect the transport tube to the entrance and leave it alone; the ants cross when ready, usually within a few hours and sometimes up to two days. Keep it warm at 22–26 °C and quiet. Once workers explore the arena, scatter a few seeds from the seed set; a colony of 15 to 40 needs little, and you remove uneaten seeds every 3 to 4 days. Seeds are the staple and the included set covers the first weeks; add a small dish of sugar water as the colony grows, since carbohydrates fuel the foragers. Keep the sponges lightly damp with a weekly top-up and the nest out of direct sun, and lift seed husks and dead workers from the arena now and then. The Spoko fills over a year or two as the colony reaches roughly 400 to 600 workers; when it wants more, Formicarium Comfort, Ideal, Giant or the modular range connect with standard tubing.

Delivery and live arrival guarantee

Every colony is covered by our live arrival guarantee. The ants travel in a secure transport tube with moisture and food, and we have shipped thousands of colonies across Europe in seasonal thermal packaging, a heat pack in winter and a cool gel pack in summer. Delivery runs 1 to 2 days inside Poland (InPost); 2 to 3 days to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium (DHL); 3 to 5 days to France and the rest of the EU; 5 to 9 days to the United Kingdom; worldwide tracked and quoted at checkout. There is a video setup guide at youtube.com/@AntOnTop. If anything arrives damaged or the queen does not survive transit, contact us and we will put it right.

FAQ

Isn’t a 20 × 15 cm nest too big for 15 to 40 workers?
Not with the latches. Start with one section closed so the colony has a space sized to it, then open the second as it grows. The twin-latch system exists precisely for this.

How long before the colony fills the Spoko?
A Messor structor colony usually takes one to two years, reaching around 400 to 600 workers. It is a long-term setup, not a stopgap.

Is it safe for children, and is an ant farm cruel?
It is safe — Messor structor does not sting and watching through the acrylic involves no contact, suiting children from around 8 (younger ones with an adult). The cruelty is a queenless gel farm, whose workers die within weeks; a queen-led colony with the right food, humidity and space, as here, is the ethical way to keep ants.

Does it make a good gift?
Yes — a living gift that grows for years. Order 7 to 14 days before the date, tell us it is a present, and we will time the dispatch.

How long does delivery take?
1 to 2 days inside Poland (InPost); 2 to 3 days to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium (DHL); 3 to 5 days to France and the rest of the EU; 5 to 9 days to the United Kingdom; worldwide tracked and quoted at checkout.
