Description
If you want the lowest-cost way into a real queen-led colony, this is it. Kit Start packs a Formicarium Start (11 × 7.5 cm), a living Messor structor colony (laying queen plus ~15–40 workers) and seed food into one box, with nothing else to buy on day one. It is the compact entry point to the range, good for ~200–300 workers before you size up. A colony that grows for years, not a gel toy that lasts days.
The easiest, cheapest first step into the hobby.

Kit Start — your first complete ant farm kit with a real queen colony
Kit Start is the entry point: the lowest-cost way we offer to begin keeping ants with a genuine, laying queen rather than a queenless novelty. The box holds a Formicarium Start (11 × 7.5 cm), a living Messor structor colony and the right seed food, matched to work together from the moment it arrives, no shopping list and no experience required. The Start is the most compact nest in the range, sized to keep a young colony close and settled, and it carries that colony comfortably to around 200–300 workers before you think about more space.

A real colony, built around a laying queen
The Start is compact by design, and for a founding colony that is an advantage. A young Messor colony of 15 to 40 workers keeps a small space humid and defended more easily than a large one; in too much room it spreads thin and feels exposed. The 11 × 7.5 cm nest gives them a snug, controllable home, and the lower price reflects the size, not a drop in build. It uses the same 3 mm layered acrylic, screw-lock and sponge humidification as the rest of the range. The cheap novelty farms are gel or sand tanks with a voucher for a few workers and no queen, so the whole thing is over in two or three weeks. Kit Start is built around a laying queen, so the colony replaces its own losses and keeps growing for years, with a screw-locked lid instead of a loose clip.
Who it’s for, and as a gift
A living colony is one of the best science projects a child can keep at home, teaching patience and real biology away from the screen, and it also makes an easy classroom colony, active in daylight and simple to keep. Messor structor is a popular beginner species: it is a harvester, so it lives on seeds with no crickets or mealworms to buy, store or handle; the queen is hardy and forgives early mistakes; the workers are busy in daylight; and the colony is size-polymorphic, small minors next to big-headed majors that crack the toughest seeds, milling them into a stored paste keepers call “ant bread”. It is child-safe: the workers do not sting or bite, and the nest is escape-proof behind clear acrylic, so we suggest it from around age 8 with an adult on the weekly water and feed. As a gift it is bigger by spring, not forgotten by January; order around 7 to 14 days ahead so we can time the dispatch, ideally as a family gift with a parent on board. We keep our Messor colonies active all year, so no winter rest is needed; prefer a tropical species instead? Message us before checkout.
Setting up and feeding
Add water through the 3 mm humidification port with the syringe until the sponge feels damp, and cover the nest with a dark cloth; Messor structor prefers the dark while it settles. Connect the transport tube to the entrance and leave it alone; the ants move across when ready, usually within a few hours and sometimes up to two days. Keep it warm at 22–26 °C and quiet. Once workers explore the arena, scatter a few seeds from the Grain Set S; a colony of 15 to 40 needs little, and you remove uneaten seeds every 3 to 4 days. Seeds are the staple and the Grain Set S covers the first weeks; add a small dish of sugar water as the colony grows, since carbohydrates fuel the foragers. Keep the sponge lightly damp with a weekly top-up and the nest out of direct sun, and lift seed husks and dead workers from the arena now and then. When the colony passes roughly 200 to 300 workers the Start feels full, and that is the moment to move up: Formicarium Comfort is the usual next step, with Ideal, Giant or the modular range for more, or simply the next complete kit, Kit Comfort.
Delivery and live arrival guarantee
Every colony is covered by our live arrival guarantee. The ants travel in a secure transport tube with moisture and food, and we have shipped thousands of colonies across Europe in seasonal thermal packaging, a heat pack in winter and a cool gel pack in summer. Delivery runs 1 to 2 days inside Poland (InPost); 2 to 3 days to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium (DHL); 3 to 5 days to France and the rest of the EU; 5 to 9 days to the United Kingdom; worldwide tracked and quoted at checkout. There is a video setup guide at youtube.com/@AntOnTop. If anything arrives damaged or the queen does not survive transit, contact us and we will put it right.
FAQ
Is Kit Start really enough to begin with nothing else?
Yes. It contains everything you need for day one. Sand, decorations, a drinking bowl and tweezers are useful additions later, but none are required at the start.
Why is this the cheapest kit, is the build lower quality?
No. The lower price reflects the compact 11 × 7.5 cm nest, not the materials. It is the same 3 mm layered acrylic, screw-lock and sponge humidification as the larger kits.
How many ants are in the colony?
Roughly 15 to 40 workers plus a laying queen, the right size for the Formicarium Start, so the colony settles quickly and starts growing straight away.
Is it safe for children, and from what age?
Yes. Messor structor does not sting, and normal use is watching through the acrylic with no contact, which suits children from around 8; younger children can watch with an adult.
When will I need a bigger formicarium?
Around 200 to 300 workers. The usual upgrade is Formicarium Comfort, with Ideal, Giant or the modular range for more space.
How long does delivery take?
1 to 2 days inside Poland (InPost); 2 to 3 days to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium (DHL); 3 to 5 days to France and the rest of the EU; 5 to 9 days to the United Kingdom; worldwide tracked and quoted at checkout.
