Description

The plain, neutral floor every arena starts on: natural beige sand, medium 0.5–1.2 mm grain, unbleached, untreated and safe in direct contact with the colony. It packs firm enough for Messor, Lasius and Formica to tunnel, yet its quiet tone lets your stones and landmarks do the talking. Supplied in an 8×4×2 cm bag.

Description

Natural sand for formicariums and ant arenas

Before any colour goes down, you want a clean floor that ants can actually dig in. Natural sand is that floor: plain beige, medium 0.5–1.2 mm grain, unbleached and untreated, with an even tone and no dye. It is supplied in an 8×4×2 cm bag and ships from Poland with tracked EU, UK and worldwide delivery, and it is safe in direct contact with queens, brood and workers.

Why keepers build on it

The grain is the point. Medium sand packs firm enough for tunnelling species to hold stable burrows, yet stays loose enough to level and sculpt by hand. Because the tone is neutral, it disappears under your decor instead of fighting it, so landmarks, moss stones and coloured quartz read clearly against it. It is also the honest base layer: lay it down, then add colour on top where you want it.

Who it suits

Everybody, and every species. Beginners setting up a first arena get a forgiving floor; experienced keepers get a clean foundation under decorative landmarks. Dry-climate ants such as Messor and Cataglyphis take to it readily, and it works just as well as the base of a mixed display.

How to use it

Spread a 1–2 cm layer across the arena floor, pour it dry, level it, and set your decor on top. Most digging species — Messor, Lasius, Formica — tunnel in it readily, so a deeper bed rewards you with visible burrowing. Leave it plain as a foundation under miniatures and stones, or scatter coloured quartz over it for contrast.

Pairs well with

Coloured quartz sand and decorative stones for contrast layers, our miniature landmarks and architectural figures, and moss stones for texture. Mix a little into coconut substrate for firmer tunnels in humid setups.

FAQ

How much sand do I need?
A 1–2 cm layer across the arena floor is standard. Add bags for larger arenas or a deeper digging bed.

Is it sterile?
It is clean but not sterilised. For sensitive species, bake it at 200 °C for 30 minutes before use.

Will ants dig in it?
Yes. Most digging species, including Messor, Lasius and Formica, tunnel in it readily.

Which species is it for?
All of them. It is the default arena substrate and works for any colony.

Can I clean and reuse it?
Yes. Rinse it under running water, then dry it fully before it goes back so it does not clump. No detergents needed.

A note on care: each item is built for a specific job — please use it only as intended. Responsibility for correct, safe use rests with the keeper; ANTonTOP accepts no liability for misuse or damage from improper use.
