Description
If you keep ants to watch them, viewing quality is everything. The Crystal (20 × 13 × 10 cm) is built around one priority — high-clarity transparent walls that show every gallery, worker and brood cluster in fine detail. Tall 16 mm chambers suit medium-to-large species from Camponotus to Messor harvesters, and the 400–1200 capacity means a maturing colony grows into it. As much a living display as a home.

Formicarium Crystal — a clear acrylic ant nest for the sharpest view of an established colony
The Crystal is built around a single priority: visibility. High-clarity transparent acrylic walls give an unusually sharp view of the whole colony — every chamber, worker and brood cluster — so the nest doubles as a living display on a desk or shelf. At 20 × 13 × 10 cm with roomy 16 mm chambers and a 400–1200 capacity, it suits established medium-to-large species from Camponotus to Messor harvesters. Laser-cut from 3 mm acrylic in Poland and shipped year-round with heat or cool packs and a live arrival guarantee.

Why the tall clear chambers work
Viewing quality is the point here, so the walls are high-clarity and the chambers are tall. At 16 mm even large workers and their brood stay easy to follow, where shorter nests start to obscure the colony: trophallaxis, brood-tending and a foraging column forming all read clearly through the panes. The 20 × 10 × 10 cm arena gives foragers genuine room, and the matching nest section houses a serious worker force of 400–1200, so it suits medium-to-large species from Camponotus to Messor harvesters. It is a display piece that happens to be a home, sized so a maturing colony grows into it rather than out of it. Smaller or younger colonies are better started in a compact nest first; if you settle a developing colony here, keep it in part of the Crystal at the outset and let it spread as the worker count climbs.
Humidity and care
Add water to the sponge chamber through the 3 mm port with a syringe once or twice a week and it spreads by capillary action between the layered sheets, holding an even gradient the colony chooses from without ever wetting the ants. Top up before the sponge dries and avoid flooding; in a large clear nest, over-watering is the fastest route to the condensation and mold that ruin the view. Laser-cut micro-perforations keep passive airflow constant without drafts, so clear leftover food promptly and the view stays sharp.
Setup and escape protection
The Crystal arrives clean and ready. Peel the protective film from both faces for optically clear walls, connect a tube if you are joining a test tube or outworld, fill the humidity chamber and populate. The fitted lid and arena walls hold workers in; for tiny or climbing species, a thin band of anti-escape fluid around the arena rim adds security.
Pairs well with
A drinking dish or feeding plate to keep food off the substrate, protein and carbohydrate jelly for balanced feeding, soft tweezers for delicate brood work, and a syringe for watering. The 3 mm port takes tubing to add an arena or link a larger nest from our formicaria range as the colony grows. Dress the arena with sand, a stone or moss, keeping the paths clear so the display stays clean.
FAQ
What sets the Crystal apart?
Clarity — high-clarity transparent acrylic for the most detailed view of the colony, with tall 16 mm chambers.
How big a colony does it suit?
Roughly 400–1200 workers; the 16 mm chambers fit medium-to-large species comfortably.
How do I water it?
Through the 3 mm port with a syringe, once or twice a week, into the sponge chamber — lightly moist, never flooded.
Can I expand it?
Yes — connect a larger nest or arena by tube when the colony grows.
Will it take large Camponotus?
Yes — the 16 mm chambers fit medium-to-large species, and the arena gives big foragers room to move.
How is it shipped?
Dispatched in 24 h from Poland with tracked EU and worldwide delivery, year-round with heat or cool packs and a live arrival guarantee.
