Pheidole protea is a big-headed ant from South Africa with a clear minor-and-soldier split, suiting beginners who can provide warm, humid conditions.

Why this species

This Sub-Saharan species is forgiving once it has the warmth and humidity it needs, which keeps the care approachable. Shared-queen nests let colonies establish fast and carry a useful safety margin, so a beginner sees early progress. The two-caste system is easy to read, with busy little foragers working alongside broad-headed soldiers on guard. Its southern-African origin makes it a slightly off-the-beaten-track addition for keepers who like variety in where their ants come from rather than the usual Asian imports. A dependable choice for anyone ready to keep it properly tropical.

Feeding

A Sub-Saharan omnivore, it works sugars and honeydew for the workers while the majors mill firmer protein for the brood. Keep a sweet source out at all times and offer insects through the week to support its steady climb.

Housing & formicarium

Found the queen in a test tube and move her on once workers cover the floor. This South African ant keeps a damp nest, so house it in a moisture-holding aerated concrete (Ytong), gypsum or 3D-printed nest, dampened at one end with a drier foraging side. Upgrade to a larger nest as brood and workers fill the space. The minors are small, so keep escapes out with a fluon or talc-and-water barrier, or a light oil film on smooth rims. ANTonTOP formicaria and starter kits match this genus and scale with the colony.

Climate & wintering

As a tropical species, this one takes no cool rest, so keep the warmth steady and feed it all year. Keep the nest at 24-27 °C and the arena at 25-29 °C, with humidity of 65-80% in the nest and 55-70% in the arena. Heat one side only so the colony can pick its spot along a gradient.

Growth forecast + what you receive

Pheidole grow at a brisk pace, and with several queens laying this colony can build toward around 10,000 workers over time. Brood runs egg to worker in about 3-5 weeks in the warmth. You receive a queen, or more than one, with workers and brood, ready to settle in and keep expanding.

Did you know

  • Pheidole is one of the most species-rich ant genera on Earth, with over a thousand described species, many of them African.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa is a hotspot for the genus, home to a wide spread of big-headed species filling different roles.
  • Colonies with multiple queens tend to establish quickly and recover well from losses.
  • The major caste gives these ants their name, with heavy heads built to crush seeds and tougher food.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pheidole protea good for beginners?

Does this big-headed ant sting or bite?

It has a mild bite and a sting, but it is mild and easy to handle.

How large does a Pheidole protea colony get?

Up to 10,000 workers over time.

How big is the queen?

The queen is 7-9 mm, larger than the 3-4 mm workers and 4-6 mm soldiers.

How fast does it grow?

It grows quickly when kept warm and humid.

What does it eat?

Sugar water or jelly plus insects such as crickets and flies; it does not eat seeds.

Keeping & shipping essentials

Escape prevention. Coat the inner rim of every open arena with fluon (PTFE), or use talc-and-water or an oil barrier as a backup, and keep a tight, fine-mesh lid on top. Check the barrier regularly, since dust, condensation and feeding debris break a fluon line over time. Keep tubing connectors tight and seal any gaps in the nest.

Keeping reminders. Always offer fresh water and never let the nest dry out completely. Give carbohydrates continuously and protein a few times a week, and remove uneaten insect prey within 24 hours before it moulds. Keep the formicarium out of direct sunlight and away from constant vibration, which stresses a young colony. A water-filled test tube plugged with cotton makes an ideal spare incubator whenever you need one.

Before you buy – do not rehouse too early. Have a test-tube setup or a small formicarium with an outworld and a working barrier ready before your colony arrives. A founding colony grows slowly at first, which is normal. Moving a small colony into a large nest too soon invites mould, mites and stress, and the workers die off one by one. Keep the colony in its open test tube on the arena, plug the nest entrance with cotton, and open up the next chambers only once the colony fills roughly 10-15% of the space.

What we ship. Every colony ships with a live-arrival guarantee, backed by our 24h unboxing-video guarantee: if the queen does not arrive alive, we reship free.
