The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world at 828 m – about twice the height of the Empire State Building, and 200 m taller than the next-tallest skyscraper (Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur). Opened in 2010 after six years of construction, it was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill – the same firm behind New York’s Willis Tower and the new World Trade Center. The Y-shaped plan reduces wind resistance, and the tower’s height required pumping concrete to a record 605 m for tall-building construction. It cost $1.5 billion.
