Description
Earth brown, the closest coloured sand to real soil — warmth without the neon, made for naturalistic biotopes where the ants and decor lead, not the floor. Very fine ~0.01–0.05 mm inert silica quartz, non-toxic colour fixed to each grain, safe in direct ant contact. Pour a 1–2 cm bed, or blend with natural and green sand for a layered forest floor. One of 13 quartz colours, in an 8×4×2 cm bag.
Warm, soil-toned ground for a natural-looking colony.

Brown quartz sand for naturalistic and biotope ant arenas
Of the 13 colours in the range, brown sits closest to real soil. That makes it the easy choice when you want warmth and a realistic, biotope-style floor rather than a bright accent — a settled earth tone that lets the ants and decor, not the sand, take the eye. It is inert silica quartz, dyed with non-toxic colour and washed clean, with a very fine grain of roughly 0.01–0.05 mm (well under 1 mm). It comes in an 8×4×2 cm bag and ships from Poland across the EU, UK and worldwide.
What brown does in an arena
The colour is fixed to each grain rather than loosely coated, so spraying or rinsing won’t wash it into the water dish or stain the acrylic. As true quartz it holds a sculpted surface and does not break down with handling. The earthy tone reads as natural ground and keeps the focus on the colony and the scene around it.
Who it’s for
Keepers building naturalistic and biotope arenas, woodland and forest-floor scenes, and anyone who wants colour without anything neon. It works as a quiet base under moss stones, tree miniatures and stone landmarks, and as a realistic foraging floor for most species.
How to use it
Pour a 1–2 cm layer across the floor, level it dry, and build decor on top. Tunnelling species such as Messor, Lasius and Formica work fine quartz much as they would natural sand, so a deeper bed gives visible burrowing. Use it edge to edge for an even earth tone, or blend it with natural and green sand for a layered forest floor.
Pairs well with
Green and grass-green quartz for a forest-floor gradient, moss stones and miniature trees, and stone landmarks for a woodland biotope. Layer it with natural sand for subtle depth across the floor.
FAQ
Is the colour safe for ants?
Yes. It is inert quartz with a non-toxic colourant, fixed to the grain and safe in direct contact.
Will it bleed if the arena is sprayed?
No. The colour is bonded to each grain, so misting or rinsing won’t tint the water or acrylic.
Can I mix it with natural sand?
Yes. Blending with natural beige sand deepens or lightens the earth tone for a layered floor.
Will ants tunnel in it?
Most digging species — Messor, Lasius, Formica — tunnel in it much as they do in natural sand.
How is it different from natural sand?
Natural sand is medium-grain beige; brown quartz is a finer, dyed earth-brown for a richer, more even colour.
