Description
White is the backdrop colour. A clean, neutral floor that pushes everything else forward, so black Camponotus and Polyrhachis read razor-sharp against it and any decor takes centre stage. Very fine ~0.01–0.05 mm inert silica quartz, non-toxic finish fixed to each grain, never clouds the glass. Lay a 1–2 cm base, or use it as the foundation to layer other colours on top. One of 13 quartz shades, 8×4×2 cm bag.
Let your ants and decor own the scene on a bright, clean floor.

White quartz sand for display arenas and dark-ant contrast
White is the one shade that gets out of the way. Instead of competing with the colony, it pushes the ants, brood and decor forward, which is why it is the most versatile floor in the range and the natural base for layering other colours on top. It is washed silica quartz with a non-toxic, fixed finish, supplied in an 8×4×2 cm bag and shipped sealed from Poland across the EU, UK and worldwide. The grain is very fine — about 0.01–0.05 mm, well under 1 mm — so most digging species walk on it, carry it and tunnel through it just as they would in natural sand.
What white does in an arena
Reds, blacks and metallic gasters read cleanly against a pale floor and photograph beautifully, and the whole setup looks tidy and deliberate. It is at its best under dark ants such as Camponotus or Polyrhachis, where black workers against bright sand give a sharp contrast. The finish is fixed to each grain rather than dusted on, so misting, condensation or a spill won’t cloud the glass, and the sand stays inert — no effect on humidity chemistry, no reaction with food.
Who it’s for
Display keepers chasing maximum contrast under dark ants, anyone building a clean minimalist or bright-themed arena, and keepers who want a neutral base to layer over. It suits founding setups and established colonies across every kept genus; with Camponotus, Polyrhachis or Messor it gives the strongest contrast available.
How to use it
Spread an even 1–2 cm layer for a clean backdrop, then add bands or scatters of coloured quartz and decorative stones on top to pick out paths and zones. To warm or grey the tone, blend it with natural sand. Keep it drier where you want it loose, lightly dampen it where it needs to hold around decor.
Pairs well with
Coloured quartz, miniature landmarks, moss stones and decorative gravel. Within the 13-colour range, set it against red, black or turquoise for graphic contrast, or scatter coloured stones on top for texture. Acrylic and 3D-printed drinking bowls sit neatly on the firm, bright floor.
FAQ
Is white quartz sand safe for ants?
Yes. It is inert silica quartz with a non-toxic, fixed finish, safe in direct contact with queens, brood and workers.
Will it cloud the glass when wet?
No. The finish is bonded to each grain, so misting or a spill won’t transfer colour or cloud the glass.
Which ants look best on it?
Dark species — Camponotus, Polyrhachis, Messor — stand out most sharply against the bright neutral floor.
Will my ants tunnel in it?
Most digging species tunnel and forage in it like natural sand, thanks to the very fine ~0.01–0.05 mm grain.
Can I layer other colours over it?
Yes. White is the ideal base for the range; add bands or scatters of coloured quartz or stones on top.
