Description

There’s one moment every founding colony reaches: the test tube is full and it needs a proper home. The Centre (14 × 11 cm) is built for exactly that step. Ready to populate from around 50 workers, with a 9 mm chamber for most popular species, a sponge humidity chamber and passive airflow; capacity 50–300. It’s small on purpose — a young colony settles faster and stays cleaner in a nest it can actually fill.

Description

Formicarium Centre — a compact acrylic ant nest for a colony’s first move out of the test tube

The Centre is made for one precise moment: the day a founding colony outgrows its test tube and needs a real first home. At 14 × 11 cm, laser-cut from 3 mm acrylic in Poland, it is ready to populate from around 50 workers, with a 9 mm chamber height that suits most popular beginner species such as Lasius, Messor, Camponotus and Tetramorium. It is small on purpose: a young colony settles faster and stays cleaner in a nest it can fill. Shipped year-round with heat or cool packs and a live arrival guarantee.

Why the small first nest works

Moving a colony straight from a tube into a large nest is where a lot of beginners come unstuck: the empty chambers turn into damp, stale pockets a small colony can’t keep clean. The Centre is sized to skip that, small enough to hold humidity where it matters and big enough to grow into for months. It is the natural step up from a test tube and an easy nest for a first-time keeper or a classroom, with clear walls that let you watch the queen, brood piles and every forager without opening anything. When the colony is ready, the 3 mm port takes tubing to an arena or larger home, so growth never means a forced relocation. Fast-growing giants like large Messor barbarus or big Camponotus will use it through founding, then move on to something roomier.

Humidity and care

Fill the sponge chamber through the 3 mm port with a syringe once or twice a week and the water spreads by capillary action between the layered sheets, giving a gentle gradient (damp near the sponge, drier toward the arena) so the colony picks the spot that suits its brood. Top the sponge up before it dries completely and never flood it; lightly moist is the goal. Laser-cut micro-perforations keep passive airflow constant, and fresh air plus controlled moisture is your main defence against mold, so clear leftover food promptly.

Setup and escape protection

The Centre arrives clean and ready. Peel the protective film from both faces, connect a tube if you are joining a test tube or outworld, fill the humidity chamber and populate. The fitted lid and arena walls hold workers in; for tiny or climbing species, a thin band of anti-escape fluid around the arena rim adds security.

Pairs well with

A drinking dish or feeding plate so food doesn’t spoil into the substrate, protein and carbohydrate jelly for steady nutrition, soft tweezers for brood and food, and a syringe for watering. Tubing connects a larger nest or arena when the colony outgrows the Centre. Dress the small arena lightly: a pinch of sand, a moss stone or a miniature house that clears the 4 cm height.

FAQ

Is the Centre a good first nest?
Yes — it is made for a young colony’s first move out of the test tube, sized to populate from around 50 workers.

How many ants does it hold?
Around 50–300 workers; the 9 mm chamber height fits most popular beginner species.

How do I water it?
Through the 3 mm port with a syringe, once or twice a week, into the sponge chamber — never flood it.

Can I expand it?
Yes — connect a larger nest or arena by tube when the colony grows, and the ants migrate over on their own.

Does it suit children and classrooms?
With adult setup, yes — the acrylic is solid and the lid is secured; keep small assembly parts away from very young children.

Do you ship outside the EU?
Yes — dispatched in 24 h from Poland with tracked EU and worldwide delivery, year-round with heat or cool packs and a live arrival guarantee.
