Description
Deep wine-red gravel that adds richness instead of brightness. The 1.5–8 mm mixed grade builds dramatic dark zones on the floor, strongest beside pale sand or white miniatures. Inert, washed, colony-safe, colour fixed so it won’t bleed. One 8×4×2 cm bag tops a 10×10 to 20×10 cm arena. Suits dark wood, slate and stone landmarks.
Deepen the palette without lighting it up.

Claret decorative stones for ant arenas
Where red shouts, claret broods. This deep wine-red — burgundy, really — adds richness to a floor rather than brightness, and it earns its place in a darker, more grown-up palette. The grade is a mixed 1.5–8 mm natural stone, dyed and washed, chunkier than sand and finished with the same non-toxic colour-fixing as our quartz range. Supplied in an 8×4×2 cm bag, shipped from Poland with tracked EU, UK and worldwide delivery, and safe in direct contact with the colony.
What the depth does
These are decor stones, not tunnelling substrate. The deep claret reads as rich and high-contrast, especially next to pale sand or white miniatures, and the mixed grain breaks up a flat floor with texture. Because the colour is bonded to the stone, spraying or rinsing the arena won’t bleed red into the water dish or stain the acrylic. It deepens a scene rather than competing for attention in it.
Who it suits
Display keepers building dramatic, high-contrast arenas, and anyone who wants a deep accent that adds richness over brightness. Claret suits arenas with dark wood, slate or stone landmarks, where it pulls the palette together instead of clashing with it.
How to use it
Scatter about 0.5–1 cm over fine sand for a top accent, or run a strip as a path or border between zones. The grain is too large for ants to tunnel, so it sits on top while the colony digs in the sand beneath. Set claret against white or black quartz sand for the strongest contrast.
Pairs well with
White and black quartz sand for high-contrast displays, dark wood and stone landmarks, and our other decorative-stone colours for layered schemes. Combine with grey quartz sand for a slate-and-wine look.
FAQ
Is the colour safe for ants?
Yes. The non-toxic dye is fixed to the stone and safe in direct contact with the colony.
Will it bleed if the arena is sprayed?
No. The colour is bonded to each stone, so misting and rinsing don’t transfer it.
Will ants dig in it?
No. The 1.5–8 mm grain is too large to tunnel. Use it over a sand layer the ants can dig in.
How much does one bag cover?
The 8×4×2 cm bag covers roughly a 10×10 to 20×10 cm arena as a top accent layer.
Can I combine it with other colours?
Yes. Pair it with other decorative-stone colours or quartz sand for layered, themed scenes.
